We begin our tour through Layou Valley road which runs between Pont Cassé (the only and main roundabout of the island), at the foot of the Morne Trois Pitons and the mouth of the near settlement of Layou. This road runs alongside the river with a number of beautiful pools and small beaches that are perfect for picnics or bathing, as well as through banana plantations and the heights of the Layou Park area, where there are lovely views across the interior and of the three peaks of Morne Trois Pitons.
At the Pont Cassé roundabout we take the direction of Bells, to discover the beautiful Spanny Falls. Spanny falls are two beautiful waterfalls (30 minutes one way). We walk along a small track into the woods, after ten minutes we reach the first waterfall. The second one is a bit more difficult to reach since we have to use a rope and three roots. After a fun climb we reach the top of the ridge where the trail continues. The trail then climbs down to the second waterfall with its broader and deeper pool which is great for bathing. We then continue our road in the direction of the Carib Territory.
On the road, if you wish to do some more bathing we will make a stop at Sisserou falls.
We then drive along the Central Forest Reserve, area called Deux Branches, to reach the eastern coast and the Carib Territory, the last of the indigenous Caribs (Kalinago). It is the home of approximately 3000 mixed descendants of the Kalinago, the remaining survivors of of the first inhabitants of the island. The land is owned by the Carib Council, thus ensuring an element of independence for Dominica’s native people.
The Territory produces high-quality straw hats, baskets and other handicrafts, however, the production of bananas is still the main source of income. Coconuts, copra, soyabeans, ginger, tropical fruit, and various root vegetables are also produced in high numbers. Along the road, like in Salybia it is possible to purchase these beautiful crafts and produce.
We then take a beautiful road which runs from Layou to Jimmit called Warner Road which offers exceptionnal panoramic views of the West coast.
Another exhilarating day in Dominica.
